How to build a Sustainable & Ethical Wardrobe – Part 4
In a world dominated by fast fashion, how can we as consumers become more conscious without having to spend a fortune and throwing out our entire wardrobe?
Support Local Ethical Brands
So we come to our forth and final post in our building an ethical and sustainable wardrobe and our focus is on Ethical Brands. Now that you’ve cleaned out your wardrobe, homed in on your style, and learned how to buy savvy and with intention, you’re ready for the fun part! You can go out and purchase those “need” items from ethical and sustainable companies that deserve your hard-earned money.
If more more eco aware is you main focus, look for items made from organic cotton, hemp or wool. All natural fibres that stand the test of time and have less environmental damage than polyester or other main made fibres. If you are more concerned with the ethics of your clothing’s production, look for brands that are transparent about their labor policies and pay fair living wages to their employees. Be sure to also look at the country of origin on the product description or tag. China is normally a country where companies mass produce by the bucket load, and although many people feel India is not a reputable place to produce, its sometimes can be. There a many brands making ethically in India, with co-ops and through local schemes. Its worth it to check the companies about us section, if they are telling you where and with who they are producing its a pretty safe bet.
So after your wardrobe check and your thrifting trip, you might have a couple more basic items you want to buy. I guarantee you that you can find the item you need made in a way that aligns with your values, though it’s a lot harder to do so in your local mall.
